| Tough Enough to Wear Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness |

On Tuesday, October 27th, the Alcorn School District hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Day to help raise money for Breast Cancer research and to teach students how important it is to show compassion and care for others. To show their support for those who are struggling with the disease, students and staff alike participated in a “Walk for a Cure” at each campus. It was a touching sight as parents, grandparents, and community members joined students in the walk, bringing everyone together for such a worthy cause.
In preparation for this special day, the Alcorn schools had been working to raise money for the National Cancer Institute to be used specifically for Breast Cancer research. In T-shirt sales alone, the district raised $3,217.73, and all other fundraisers and donations increased that figure to an amazing total of $17,523.34.
Stacy Suggs, Superintendent of Education, and the Alcorn School District Administrative Office would like to thank all of our administrators, faculty, staff, and students for working together with such passion and enthusiasm to make this event successful. We also want to say a special “thank you” to all of the parents, families, and community members who donated their money and their time to help Breast Cancer patients across the nation. We are proud to say that our schools and communities are excited about helping others! Thanks to their donations and creative efforts, our district is able to give a generous donation that will make a difference in the lives of so many people.

| RES Receives Backpacks from Anonymous Donor |

Rienzi Elementary received backpacks for all of their students from an anonymous donor. At the beginning of the school year, the donor saw an article in the paper stating that the Rienzi PTC was providing school supplies to all of the RES students and that the parents needed to provide only a backpack for their child. After the article was printed, Rienzi PTC President Beth Johnson received a call from a gentleman stating that he felt led to donate the backpacks to all of the students.
The effort to provide school supplies to RES students was a success thanks to local donors, the Salvation Army, Rienzi Baptist Church, and the Rienzi community. All students at Rienzi Elementary School were provided with all of their school supplies, a new backpack, and a class T-shirt. In addition, the staff members were given a school T-shirt courtesy of the Rienzi PTC.
The Rienzi PTC would like to thank all of their supporters who made this school supply drive possible. Due to the publicity RES received during the summer regarding school supplies, the PTC received a $10,000 anonymous donation. |

Health Science Technology students assisted Magnolia Regional Health Center by participating in their annual disaster drill on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. This year’s disaster drill depicted a swine flu pandemic. The students acted as victims of various ages and conditions suffering from the swine flu and were processed like real patients. The purpose of the disaster drill was to test the emergency preparedness of the EMS and the ability of hospital staff to respond to an excessively large number of swine flu victims. This was a wonderful opportunity for the health occupations students to see healthcare professionals at work. Students learned how large numbers of patients are triaged and treated as well as the measures designed to prevent the spread of the disease.

| KHS Shows Their Support for Breast Cancer Patients |
| 8/27/2009 4:04:14 PM |
|
Kossuth High School students and staff recently came together to show support for Breast Cancer patients and their families. James Vansandt, KHS history teacher, invited everyone at Kossuth High to wear pink for Breast Cancer awareness and pose for a group photograph in front of the school. As seen in the photo, the response to his invitation was overwhelming. Mr. Vansandt then sent the photo to his daughter-in-law, Kara, who was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 Cancer and a Class 3 tumor. Kara, wife of Jamie Vansandt (1999 KHS graduate), is employed as a teacher in Anchorage, Alaska, while Jamie is serving in the military in Afghanistan. Mr. Vansandt wanted Kara to receive the KHS photo on the day of her surgery to let her know that even though they could not be there for her, many people were thinking of her and praying for her as well as for all those struggling with Breast Cancer. |
